Comment
There are two distinct variants of the Pattern 1 button, one with coarse lettering and one with fine lettering; the former may be an earlier type, but this is mere speculation.

A photograph of a B&ALR tramwayman (see link) clearly shows that they wore standard Midland Railway 'wyvern' buttons prior to 1923.
